Buccaneer: The Pursuit of Infamy TCG is based upon the computer
game of the same name, available online from Steam and also boxed retail
across Europe, published by Nobilis. Like the pc game, the card game is
focused on a struggle for dominance between a number of rival, fictional, naval factions.
|
|
The card game version will initially include 4 factions –
the Golden Buccaneers, the Crown, the Scarlet Corsairs and the Freebooters.
As the names suggest, three of the starting factions are pirate factions
while the fourth, the Crown, is a powerful, European style nation based
loosely upon the Royal Navy. The game is based in a Caribbean setting with
18th century technologies and tactics.
Like many other TCGs, Buccaneer employs a basic 60 card, customisable
resource deck, card usage limitations, a graveyard or discard pile
(Davy Jones’s Locker in this case) and a wide variety of card types and
abilities to ensure that no two games are ever the same. But as well as
familiar concepts, we have attempted to keep the game as original as possible.

The object of the game is simple… “The Pursuit of Infamy”.
Each player will start with a very limited Infamy total –
determined by their choice of starting location (Home Port).
Their objective is to raise their Infamy total to 20, while
simultaneously attempting to prevent their opponent from doing
the same. There are numerous methods of gaining Infamy –
territorial expansion, ship building, character recruitment,
combat, diplomacy, espionage, etc. Similarly there are numerous
ways of losing it… namely your opponent sinking your ships,
capturing your territories, killing your characters and so forth.
Infamy can also be used as a resource and certain powerful cards
will use Infamy as a playing cost rather than Gold, which is the
primary method for putting cards into play.
The game can also be won by capturing your opponent’s Home Port or
by exhausting their Resource Deck, so strategies will not always
be the same for all players. In fact, one of the current testers is
working on a ship-free deck that relies on winning a game without
using any military units whatsoever!
Players begin with a Home Port card and a seven card hand. A Home Port
will generate a limited amount of Gold with which to buy cards, so
territorial expansion is key. Other Region cards will permit a player
to increase their wealth and influence – gaining Gold and Infamy. This
expansion needs to be protected with the production of Ships and Land
Units though, or poorly defended regions can easily fall prey to a
better prepared opponent.
Ships provide the main military force in the game, assisted by Land Units
for assaulting enemy positions and Characters and Upgrades to boost
individual ship statistics. Other card types include Regions, Buildings,
Sudden Events, Effects and Action cards, each of which is covered in the
Card Types section in greater detail.

Some of you visiting this site may have found it after receiving
limited edition Buccaneer Trading Cards in your Nobilis boxed version
of our pc game. If so you’re some of the lucky ones, as those cards
will not initially be available from any other source. It is worth
stressing, however, that while those cards are available, the game
itself is still very much in development and will be for some months
to come. So this entire site will be… a developer’s blog in itself as
it tracks progress of the card game through to completion. The Forums
are a good place to watch development and, if you’re interested, to get
involved personally. We will have a developers area where design discussions
and testing reports are displayed as well as new card designs and mechanics
are shown. So if you would like to get “hands on” and have a say in a
game that YOU may like to play… sign up and make yourself known. :-)
